Department of Surgery - Residency Training Program

The Department of Surgery’s vision is to create a surgeon who will update and upgrade clinical and technical skills on a regular basis, and will remain as up-to-date thirty years post residency as the first day that they left their training.

The plan to achieve this vision entails:

  1. The recognition of evolving databases in knowledge and techniques in surgery.
  2. The recognition of the modulating effects of the outside environment including the patient, public, and/or the government.
  3. The recognition and promotion of quality of life in surgical training and thereafter.
  4. The recognition of the surgeon as a communicator, an administrator and a politician.

Surgical Resident Database

This Resident Surgical Database is designed for simple and easy use yet contains a complete and accurate documentation of resident operative experiences. The implementation of this program has several purposes. First for the individual resident, it provides a convenient and accurate documentation of all operative experience from the R1 to the R5 year. This is necessary for both personal use in self-evaluation as well as documentation of experience for application to licensing authorities including the American Board of Surgery and various Health Authorities. It provides the opportunity to record learning points for each operation attended, an option that may be used at the discretion of each resident. It is also a convenient method of submitting staff evaluation in a completely confidential manner.

The acquisition of this data is also of enormous benefit to the General Surgery training program itself. The database will allow identification and correction of deficits in surgical experience through modification of the training plan for each individual resident. It will also help to facilitate the goal of increasing high-quality operative experience for all residents. It will provide an easy and accurate method of staff teaching evaluation. This data will also allow comparison of the University of Calgary Program with other programs across the country. This can be used to help attract quality candidates to the training program.

For these reasons it is extremely important that all residents use this database to document the number and quality of their operative experiences.
