Office of Surgical Education

Overview

The Office of Surgical Education is an inter-divisional consultative body which functions to develop, improve and share education concepts and endeavours within the Department of Surgery at all levels of University education: undergraduate, post-graduate, fellowships and continuing medical education.

Roles and Expectations of the OSE are to:

  • provide leadership in the development of faculty skills pertaining to education.
  • provide support and guidance for faculty who develop and run surgical education programs at all levels
  • encourage and support educational research.
  • evaluate education activities in the Department of Surgery.
  • organize and chair meetings of the Surgical Education Group
  • represent the Surgical Education Group at Surgical Executive meetings
  • provide leadership and consultation to members of the Department of Surgery in regard to Educational matters including:
     
    1. Development of Faculty skills pertaining to education
    2. Support and guidance of faculty who develop and organize surgical education programs at all levels
       
  • Representation at Departmental Committees:
     
    1. Undergraduate Surgical Education: SUGEC
    2. Post graduate Surgical education: PGSTC
    3. Surgical Fellowship Committee
    4. Continuing Medical Education: CME

Surgical Undergraduate Education Committee (SUGEC)

The focus of the SUGEC Committee is on undergraduate surgical education.

Functions include:

  • To improve undergraduate teaching.
  • To continue the development and review of objectives for the Clerkship Program
  • To develop a Department of Surgery method of evaluation of the Clerkship objectives.
  • To raise the visibility and perceived Department priority on Undergraduate teaching.
  • To advise and mentor Division Representatives regarding guidelines for accreditation.

Postgraduate Surgical Training Committee (PGSTC)

The focus of the PGSTC Committee is on Surgical Residency Education.

Functions include:

  • To represent educational needs and concerns, within and outside of the Dept. of Surgery, through statements issued and endorsed by this committee.
  • Internal departmental review of residency programs to optimize residency education including academic content and evaluation.
  • Review of Royal College accreditation results to advise and mentor program directors of residency program committees regarding guidelines for accreditation.
  • To facilitate incorporation of new medical education philosophies into University of Calgary postgraduate surgical training programs, mentor programs and to sponsor and support faculty development.
  • To provide a discussion forum for common issues affecting the education of surgical residents and to create and administer shared educational resources and activities.
  • Acquiring and coordinating resources applied to common educational goals between programs (seminars and courses for residents, faculty development, etc.).
  • Facilitating and acquiring support for research activities pertaining to post-graduate surgical education.
