Program Outline

General

The University of Calgary Pediatric General Surgery Residency Training Program is a small preceptor-based program with abundant clinical material. There are between 1 and 3 residents in the program at any given time. The Foothills Medical Centre and the Alberta Children's Hospital are regional referral centres for Level 1 trauma, oncology, burns, and replant surgery.

PGY-1 and 2

Rotations are designed to prepare the resident for the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examinations Part II and to establish the foundations for managing the surgical patient. Seminars and courses in biostatistics, bioethics, research protocol and critical thinking are mandatory. The Royal College requires rotations in Urology, Cardiovascular Surgery, Liver Surgery / Liver Transplant are required by the program. Rotations are objective-specific to optimize resident experience. Pediatric General Surgery residents are expected to attend all Pediatric General Surgery academic rounds. Residents are exposed to all facets of Pediatric General Surgery. Time is spent in consultants' offices as well as in scheduled clinics.

Research

Residents will participate in ongoing research. This will typically include review of clinical outcome for the major anomalies, as well as describing innovations in conventional treatment. Time will also be spent in the lab of
Dr. David Sigalet, which focuses on monitoring regulation of intestinal function following massive resection.

Seminars, Courses and Rounds

Residents will be expected to attend weekly teaching rounds that are held every Wednesday and Friday mornings.
