Introduction

The Alberta Health Services (AHS) - Calgary area’s Patient/Family Safety Council was founded in early 2006.  We are a small group of committed individuals who bring relevant patient and family safety experiences and a strong desire to work as partners with health-care providers and the AHS - Calgary area to improve the safety of patient care.

The Council meets monthly.  Many members also work in smaller teams, and serve as advisors on committees and participate in other safety initiatives.
We are co-chaired by a patient/family member and a representative of the AHS - Calgary area, and we report to the AHS - Calgary area’s Executive Vice-President and Chief Clinical Officer.

Mission/Mandate

Our mission is to be partners in improving the safety of patient care in the AHS - Calgary area.

Our mandate is to provide a forum where patients and families can collaborate with the AHS - Calgary area and health-care providers to ensure that the voice of patients and families is heard and our experiences valued in improving the safety of patient care.

We assess, advise, and make recommendations to the Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer on patient safety issues related to policies, procedures, practices, design, operations and system performance.
