Importance to Health

Unsafe practices within food establishments, swimming pools, day care centres, tattoo services, or other types of facilities governed by Alberta’s Public Health Act can cause harm. People working within these facilities must ensure that proper procedures are followed to keep their clients safe.

Roles of Environmental Public Health

The Environmental Public Health Program provides health education to thousands of individuals. Public Health Inspectors participate in school and workplace health fairs, trade shows and various public events. The program responds to public inquiries, develops print materials, online documents and media releases on various environmental health and public health topics. Our program offers formal courses in food safety, swimming pool sanitation, childcare, safe drinking water, and tattoo sanitation. Courses offered by the program include:

  1. Provincial certification in food safety and hygiene in English, Cantonese, and Vietnamese
  2. Provincial certification for swimming pool operators
  3. Basic food safety for volunteers and employees
  4. Sanitation and safety for day care operators
  5. Customized environmental health and public health presentations to interested parties
  6. Hand washing programs and demonstrations in schools and child care facilities.
