Risk Assessment & Management


Under the Public Health Act, the Calgary Health Region (CHR), Environmental Public Health (EPH) Program, has a regulatory mandate, authority and responsibilities to protect public health and sensitive receptors within the regional boundary, and conducts Risk Analysis to fulfill its regulatory mandate role in the public health protection.

The Risk Assessment and Management (RAM) section is a Risk Analysis resource for the EPH Program providing assistance to all EPH program areas and other departments within the CHR on complex and technical health issues. Some of the examples of RAM support to the EPH includes, but not limited to, the following:

  • Reviewing and approving relevant land and building development and permit applications within municipalities and towns,
  • Coordinating with municipalities and Alberta Environment on the development, remediation and management of contaminated sites, municipal and biomedical waste management, municipal water quality and waste management systems, ambient and indoor air quality including air shed development, disaster preparedness
  • Responding and investigating major accidental industrial releases,
  • Advocate for and assess or review health risk assessments of proposed and existing confined feeding operations and industrial developments, and
  • Assessing potential impacts of sour gas wells on public health and the review of sour gas Emergency Response Plans.
