About Us

What Public Health Inspectors Do


The Environmental Health Program of Alberta Health Services - Calgary Region employs certified Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) and associated professionals to help provide, protect and promote a healthy environment.

The PHIs carry out their roles under the authority of the Alberta Public Health Act in the region through education, promotion, consultation, inspection, monitoring and enforcement of legislation. For example:

Rental Housing Concerns

We investigate concerns about heat, water, structural problems and sanitary conditions.

Food Facility Complaints

We investigate complaints about food safety and sanitary conditions in food facilities.

Food Poisoning Cases

We follow-up suspected and confirmed cases of food poisoning.

Food Safety and Sanitation Education

We offer food safety and sanitation courses in both classroom and home study formats. Food safety and hand washing presentations are free.

Public Health Promotion

We provide resource materials in a variety of languages. We also develop displays and presentations on public health issues.

Drinking Water Quality Issues

We provide analysis and recommendations on the safety and quality of drinking water supplies.

Recreational Water Quality Issues

We provide analysis and recommendations on the safety and quality of recreational water (e.g. public swimming pools, beaches, etc.).

General Public Health Inquiries

We respond to public health questions and concerns including sanitation practices, pest infestations and mould.

Social Care Facilities

We conduct inspections of social care facilities, such as day cares & senior lodges, as well as offer related food safety and sanitation courses.

Environmental Concerns

We investigate and provide information on environmental conditions that affect public health
