How to Become a Public Health Inspector


Summary

The following requirements need to be met before becoming a Public Health Inspector and be employed by Alberta Health Services - Calgary Region:

  • Fulfillment of admission and completion of the Environmental Health program requirements ( e.g. a degree in Bachelor of Environmental Health) from one of the Environmental Health Education Institutions in Canada. Please note that applicants who are interested in the program should check each of the Environmental Health Education Institutions as requirements may differ.
  • 12 weeks of practicum training (field training) in one of the Regional Health Authorities is required after the degree is obtained.
  • Applicants must submit two (2) formal reports, graded by Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
  • Successful completion an oral exam provided by Board of Certification of CIPHI.
  • A Certificate in Public Health Inspection Canada (CPHIC(C)), is acquired from CIPHI.
  • Maintain regular membership with CIPHI.

Alberta Branch of Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors

The Alberta Branch is one of the provincial chapters of CIPHI and is the only association that specifically represents the interests of Public Health Inspectors, Environmental Health Officers, and other allied Environmental Public Health professionals in the province of Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
