Vaccination

Welcome

Vaccination is one of the most important health care decisions an individual can make for themselves and for their children. Vaccines are a safe and effective way to provide protection against many infectious diseases, preventing serious illness and severe complications of  these diseases.

The risks from these diseases are significantly greater than any risks from the vaccines: Comparison of Effects of Diseases and Vaccines.

In Alberta, most vaccination programs are administered by public health agencies, including routine infant, pre-school, and school-aged vaccinations, as well as adult vaccinations. Physicians may also provide adult vaccinations, which include influenza, pneumococcal, and tetanus / diphtheria vaccines as required.

Vaccines are provided free of charge for those who are eligible for them. They are administered according to a schedule that has been developed by vaccination experts.

Specific information about the vaccines used in Alberta will be provided by the public health clinic at the time of vaccination, but it is also available from Alberta Health and Wellness.
