Trauma Services

Welcome

History

The Calgary Trauma Program & System is led and guided by the collaborative work of the Regional Trauma Services Program. Calgary has served as the trauma referral centre for Southern Alberta, South Western Saskatchewan and South Eastern British Columbia for a number of years. A cooperative program in the Calgary area began in 1988. In 1996, adult services were consolidated at the Foothills Medical Centre while the Alberta Children's Hospital remained the pediatric trauma centre.

Trauma System & Accreditation

Calgary has an accredited trauma system. A trauma system is an all inclusive collaboration with a pre-planned, organized and coordinated system in a defined geographical area. A trauma centre does not comprise a trauma system. For more information on the trauma system concept refer to the Trauma Association of Canada Accreditation Guidelines on their website.

Key elements of the Trauma Service include:
  • Pre-hospital triage and care of trauma patients
  • Rapid access telephone consultation and transportation
  • Clinical follow through of patients and families
  • In house and outreach professional education
  • Participation in trauma related research
  • Continuous quality monitoring and reporting
  • Data collection for submission to the Alberta Trauma Registry and the National Trauma Registry
  • Participation in the Trauma Association of Canada accreditation/verification processes

In 1998, the Foothills Medical Centre and the Alberta Children's Hospital underwent successful external review and accreditation as tertiary trauma centres by the Trauma Association of Canada. A trauma system accreditation was achieved in October 2004 with a report in January 2005. This was the first trauma system accreditation in Canada. The 2005 report indicated that the Calgary Trauma System demonstrated:

  • Commitment to population-based inclusive tenants of trauma care and injury control predicated on an integrated systems approach
  • Clear and pervasive demonstration of system balance, integration and connection in all aspect of an inclusive trauma system from prevention through rehabilitation
  • A well developed program that meets and exceeds all the benchmarks of a modern Canadian Trauma System

The primary goal and vision of the Calgary Trauma System is to maintain and continue to achieve credibility and recognition as a "gold standard" trauma system in Canada. For more information on the Calgary TAC accreditation/verification process refer to the Regional Trauma Services Annual Report 2004/2005 .
