Pediatric Trauma Orientation Manual

The Pediatric Trauma Orientation Manual was developed by the Alberta Children's Hospital Trauma Committee and revisions were made and reviewed by the committee in 2002-2003. Fellowships / Electives:

Adult Trauma/Critical Care Fellowship

The University of Calgary, Department of Surgery, offers trauma fellowship training within the auspices of the Critical Care Residency Training Program.

Upon completing this program, the surgeon will fulfill the requirements for critical care medicine certification through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and will have had extensive training in trauma systems and trauma surgery.

The Trauma Surgery Fellowship Program, offered by the Division of General Surgery at the University of Calgary is a one year fellowship with core training on the General Surgery Trauma Service and additional rotations in Critical Care and Thoracic and Vascular Surgery. Fellows will acquire additional expertise in the management of severe trauma, along with expertise in clinical research, and opportunities for career development in general surgery/trauma surgery.

Adult Trauma Surgery Clerkship Elective

The University of Calgary, Department of Surgery, Division of General Surgery, Trauma Service offers electives in trauma for medical students. Clinical duties include attendance at trauma resuscitation in the emergency department and ongoing acute care support on a dedicated trauma unit.

The principles of trauma, assessment and resuscitation are emphasized, as well as common initial trauma procedures including airway management and chest tube insertion. Attendance in the operating room is expected for emergency trauma surgeries. In addition, weekly service specific trauma rounds, monthly multi-departmental trauma rounds and weekly Division of General Surgery rounds are all provided during the course of the elective.

ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support)

The Advanced Trauma Life Support Course was originally developed by Dr. Jim Styner in 1978 and adopted by the American College of Surgeons in 1980. The course teaches an early care approach to the trauma patient. The course format includes didactic and interactive lectures, coupled with practical skills stations and a surgical skill practicum. The course schedule commences on Thursday afternoon at 1630, continues all day Friday and adjourns at approximately 1300 on Saturday.

TNCC & CATN II

Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC):

The optimal care of the trauma patient is best accomplished within a framework in which all members of the trauma team use a systematic standardized approach to the care of the injured patient. The TNCC is a course that was developed by the Emergency Nurses Association for nurses that either work in an emergency setting or who come into direct contact with trauma patients and provides both cognitive and psychomotor skills.

 

Course in Advanced Trauma Nursing (CATN II):

The Emergency Nurses Association developed the Course is Advanced Trauma Nursing (CATN II) to enable the trauma nurse to work as a collaborative member of the trauma team. The courses conceptual approach brings together broad psychophysiologic and pathophysiologic processes to specific clinical problems.
