What to expect at a visit

Free - Confidential - Walk-in service

Easy Access
  • Anyone over 12 years of age can be tested
  • No Alberta Health Care number required
Information from you
  • You will fill out a short form including name and birth date and how you can be contacted
Registered Nurses
  • Females see female nurses
  • Male may see male or female nurses
STD Doctor
  • By referral - appointment required
Wait Times can be 2 hours or more at peak times
  • Busiest times are lunch hour and after 4:00 pm
  • Some clients are prioritized

**We do not perform pregnancy tests nor prescribe birth control


Testing for STD

Syphilis
  • Blood test
Gonorrhea
  • Swab
Chlamydia
  • Urine test for male/ swab for female
  • Males - do not urinate (pee) at least 2 hours before your clinic visit!
HIV Testing
  • Blood test
  • Must return to clinic for results.
Hepatitis B and C
  • Blood test
Herpes Testing
  • Swab
  • Can only test if sores are present during visit.
Warts
  • Treated at STD clinic or by referral to dermatologist.
Pap Test
  • Swab/cell scraping
  • This is NOT an STD test, it tests for abnormal or cancer cells on the cervix.
  • All women should have this test once a year.
  • Cannot test if you have your period (menstruating.)
  • Do not have sex for 24 hours before test.
  • Do not douche before the exam.

Test Results

  • Call back for your results in 7 - 10 days
  • If your results are abnormal or positive and you have not called, you may receive a call from the clinic.
  • If you have HIV testing, NO results will be given over the phone, so you must return to the clinic for results.

Treating STD

  • It is vital that STD be treated so it is not spread to others.
  • If you have an STD, the nurse will give you free medication.
  • Take all the pills or the infection won't be cured.
  • There is no cure for herpes, warts, hepatitis B and C, or HIV, but there are treatments and medicines that can help.
