Lab and Blood Work

Q: Where do I go for Lab Tests & Blood Work?

A: Call the receptionist about two weeks before your medical appointment to let them know that you need to have blood work drawn. The Southern Alberta Clinic will prepare your blood work requisition forms, which you will need to pick up. Please call the clinic at least 24 hours before you plan to pick up the forms.

Once you collect your requisition forms, take them to the Calgary Lab Services at the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre (the same building as the Southern Alberta Clinic). The outpatient lab is open to handle HIV blood work Monday to Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Friday from 7:00 a.m. to noon.

You may also have your blood drawn at the Foothills Medical Centre or Peter Lougheed Centre if this is more convenient for you. Some rural hospitals are also available; ask a Southern Alberta Clinic nurse for details. You may want to plan for some extra time in case you have to wait for a long time for your blood work.

Routine blood work should ideally be done two weeks prior to your appointment so your doctor can review your results with you during your clinic visit.
