About the Pediatric & Adolescent Complex Pain Service

Strategically aligned with the Regional Pain Program, the Pediatric & Adolescent Complex Pain Service cares for children who experience chronic, complex pain.

Goal of this service is to care for children who experience chronic, difficult to manage pain
Pain must be the primary reason for the referral
Transition services to the Chronic Pain Centre are available if required

The Interprofessional Team

Clinical Nurse Specialist
Clinical Psychologist
Social Worker
Anesthesiologists
Physiotherapist
Rehab assistant
Secretary

Services Offered

Medical management including nerve blocks and implantable devices
Physiotherapy, acupuncture
Individual and group therapy
Family therapy
Patient education and support
Referral to the adult chronic pain clinic

How to refer to the Pediatric & Adolescent Complex Pain Service

Referral Criteria

By physician only
Children aged 0-17 residing in the Calgary Health Region and catchments and their families
Children are outpatients
Referring physician will continue to be the child's primary care giver but must be prepared to work closely with the treatment team
Children require assessment and treatment at the appropriate Alberta Children's Hospital clinic, specialist or sub-specialist prior to referral to the Complex Pain Service
Pain must be the primary complaint and the reason that the child is referred
The child may or may not have been diagnosed with a specific medical condition and must have been first assessed and treated by the appropriate ACH clinic or specialist prior to referral

Internal Referrals

Complete a direct department referral form (DDR). NOTE: This is an outpatient service
