Growth Monitoring: Overview

In the Calgary Health Region routine growth monitoring of children occurs at 2, 4, 6, 12, 18 months and 4.5 years.

Pediatric growth monitoring using growth charts has been performed by pediatricians, nurses and parents to track the growth of infants, children and adolescents since the first charts were released in 1977.

Growth charts consist of a series of percentile curves that illustrate the distribution of a child's height and weight measurement. Growth charts are intended as a clinical tool for health professionals to determine if the growth of a child is adequate. Growth charts are not intended to be used as a sole diagnostic instrument. Instead, growth charts are tools that contribute to forming an overall clinical impression for the child being measured.
