Best Beginning Program

Are you pregnant and need help?

Best Beginning is a Calgary Health Region program for pregnant teens and pregnant women living on a low income. Best Beginning is a free, voluntary, and confidential service. Best Beginning staff work with pregnant women and their families to have the healthiest baby possible.

Best Beginning provides:
  • one to one consultation with a nurse or nutritionist who will meet with you to answer questions and address concerns
  • one to one consultations with an outreach worker for community referrals, advocacy and social support
    free childbirth education classes
  • referral to other agencies (such as "housing") or health professionals as required
  • health information and counseling
  • provision of or referral to other agencies for food assistance
  • one free visit to the CHC Dental office for the pregnant women enrolled in Best Beginning
  • free milk, food and vitamins if needed

Best Beginning Books

"Best Beginning" is an easy-to-read book about pregnancy, birth, the newborn and community resources. These books are free of charge to Best Beginning clients and are available at groups and drop-ins. They are available in several languages, as well as in an Aboriginal version.
 

Best Beginning Books for Health Professionals
 

A limited number of Best Beginning books in English, the Aboriginal version, and several other languages are available for health professionals to purchase for their offices or for clients.

If you have pregnant clients that could benefit from these books, you can give them the Best Beginning phone number. Best Beginning clients can receive a book at no cost, as well as access the other services available, including free food, milk and vitamins (if needed), connections to community resources, counselling and information about healthy eating, pregnancy, labour and birth. We also provide interpretive services in several languages.
