Preventing sports injuries

Children are at risk for sport and recreation injuries because they have less coordination, slower reaction times, and less accuracy than adults. They are also less able to assess the risks involved.  Some of the most common injury-causing sports are ice hockey, soccer, basketball, football, and baseball.

Ensure that your child takes a smart risk approach to sport and recreation activities.

Look First

Be active with your child. Fitness, conditioning, and participation in a variety of sport and recreation activities reduce the risk of injury.

Inspect the grounds and equipment at the start of each activity to make sure the area is free of hazards like road traffic, open water, rocks and uneven ground, and machinery or equipment.

Supervise actively. Stay close enough that you can take action if needed. Stay alert, pay close attention, and anticipate hazards. Help kids to play by the rules for safety and fun.

Get Trained

Ensure that your child receives professional instruction in their activities of choice.

If your child sustains an injury, get the approval of a sports medicine professional before they return to their activity.

Wear the Gear

Children who do not wear or use protective equipment are at increased risk for sport-related injury. Get the right gear for each sport, make sure it fits, and make sure your child wears it properly every time he plays.
