Harm Reduction

Harm reduction is a health promotion strategy aimed at reducing the negative consequences of a behaviour, with the eventual goal of reducing the behaviour itself, to help people make healthier lifestyle choices.

Safeworks is a program designed to prevent the spread of HIV and hepatitis infection by increasing awareness and knowledge about HIV and hepatitis, risky injection and sexual practices. The program also aims at reducing the use of drugs where possible, in order to help people adopt healthier lifestyles. The team is staffed by community health nurses who reach the population of people living with substance use in Calgary.

Safeworks staff has developed trust and rapport with people living with drug use and people involved in prostitution in order to prevent disease, promote health, and reduce harm.
