Diversity Education

Healthy Diverse Populations maintains information and resources on the website and provides a variety of diversity workshops, presentations and other learning opportunities to assist all staff in working more effectively with diverse individuals and populations.

Customized Workshops

We will work with you to develop workshops on any diversity related issue that you are facing. We recently developed and facilitated a full-day workshop on Diversity and Cancer in conjunction with the Hematology and Oncology Department at the Peter Lougheed Centre. This workshop involved presentations from two subject matter experts, a panel discussion with people from four different cultural backgrounds, and group work on case studies developed especially for the workshop.

Examples of some diversity workshops that we can offer include:

  • Introduction to Diversity
  • Communicating Effectively with Diverse Populations
  • Working Effectively with People who are Different than You
  • Diversity Competency in Health Services
  • Differing Perspectives on Health and Illness
  • Mental Health and Diverse Populations

Presentations

We make one-hour presentations on various diversity issues for both operational units of the Region and external, public organizations. We recently developed and delivered a one-hour Lunch and Learn at the Rocky View General Hospital that incorporated a sophisticated PowerPoint and examples drawn from real experiences from across the Region.  Please contact Diversity Educator, Helgi Eyford at 403-943-6765 or helgi.eyford@calgaryhealthregion.ca

Scheduled Workshops

We currently offer three courses on a regular basis through People and Learning. People interesting in taking these courses can sign up through e-People.

Annual Conference

We host an annual Diversity and Wellbeing conference in November. The purpose of the conference is to bring together health researchers, practitioners and policy makers with community members and organizations to share successes, facilitate networking and create momentum in the field. The title of this year’s conference is The Diverse Faces of Mental Health. We will have over 15 workshops, two keynote presentations and a public reception with entertainment. To sign up for this years conference or to submit an abstract please send us an e-mail at diversity.services@calgaryhealthregion.ca
