Health Link

Health Link is a health information and advice telephone service provided by Calgary Health Region. Operated by nurses, it is a free service available 24 hours per day, seven days a week. You can contact Health Link to get information about any health concerns that you have. You can call us on our TTY line at 943-1552. Some examples of questions that you have might be:

“It is 4 in the morning and my baby has a fever. Should I give her medication or take her to the emergency room?”

“I just started taking new medication and now I have a rash all over my body. What should I do?”

“How do I find a family doctor?”

Health link can provide you with answers to these and other questions you might have about your health.

American Sign Language Interpreters

The Calgary Health Region provides ASL interpreters from Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services at no cost to ASL users. Interpreters can assist you when you need to go to the hospital or one of the community health centres - or when you need home care. (Doctor’s offices and walk in clinics are not part of the Calgary Health Region. You will have to arrange for your own interpreter when going to visit a physician or specialist.)

Calgary Health Region has a card available for ASL users. You might want to keep this card in your wallet with your Alberta Health Card so it is available to show to Calgary Health Region staff whenever you are using our services.

If you would like to receive this card you can:

If you have this ASL card you can use it to show to Calgary Health Region departments and they will arrange an interpreter for you.

If you do not have this card and you have an appointment at a hospital, community health centre or any other Calgary Health Region service you can request an interpreter by contacting Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services at 403-284 6203.

Scheduled appointments:

You or your health care provider can book an interpreter for your future appointment. Contact deaf & hard of hearing services as soon as you are given your appointment date and time with any of the Calgary Health Region services.

Emergency situations:

If you have the ASL card please present it to the health care provider in the emergency room to arrange for an interpreter.

If you do not have the card, ask the nurse or doctor in the Emergency department to call Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services at:

  • Monday – Friday 8:30 – 4:30 at 403-284-6203
  • After hours, weekends and holidays emergency line at 403-229-6939

TTY Phones available at all Calgary Hospitals

If you are a patient in the hospital you can rent a TTY from the Telephone and Television rental department from the following 4 hospitals

  • Foothills Medical Centre
  • Peter Lougheed Centre
  • Rockyview General Hospital
  • Alberta Children’s Hospital

The health care provider at each of the hospitals can arrange for a TTY phone or Television to be rented. They will be delivered and hooked up in your room.

At the Alberta Children’s hospital TTY phones are available for no charge at the Southern Alberta Family and Community Resource Centre
