CHILDREN’S SURGICAL SERVICES - PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

The Dental Clinic at the Alberta Children's Hospital provides both primary and comprehensive preventive and
therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, primarily those with special health care needs. Children with special health care needs are those who have or are at increased risk for a chronic physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional condition and who also require health and related services of a type or amount beyond that required by children in general. These patients requiring care for a variety of dental problems are routinely treated with success in our clinic using techniques such as communicative behavior management and mild sedation, or in the Alberta Children's Hospital Surgical Suite under general anaesthesia.

Patients require a referral in writing by a dentist or medical doctor. The dental clinic operates by appointment only. The initial appointment is a consultation consisting of the following components: medical history, dental history, clinical assessment, radiographic assessment, caries risk assessment, behavioural assessment and diagnosis. A sequential prioritized treatment plan will be presented to the caregivers. Specific information that will be provided include: nature of procedures/materials to be used, number of appointments/time frame to accomplish treatment, behaviour guidance techniques and fees for services. The caregiver will be informed of the need for and benefit of the proposed treatment and risks, benefits and alternatives will be explained. After the treatment plan is presented, caregivers will have the opportunity to ask questions and have concerns addressed prior to giving informed consent. Appointments for treatment can then be scheduled.

Emergency dental services are available.

For physicians or dentists wishing to do an online referral, please click on the referral tab, complete the
information, and send. The patient will be contacted to schedule an appointment. Please forward any recent
radiographs.
