These homes provide personal assistance, supportive services, lodging and meals to one or more adults aged 18 and up who are unrelated to the operator. In personal care homes the emphasis is on helping residents with daily activities, rather than treating them for medical conditions. People who need 24-hour support, but who want to live in a homelike atmosphere may choose to move into a personal care home.

The Calgary Health Region has approved 47 such residences across the city each with three to six beds. Some are designed for people with different needs like multiple sclerosis, brain injuries, frail seniors and mental health conditions. Approved homes have to meet stringent regulations, for example nutrition has to follow Canada’s Food Guide and the homes have to be equipped with smoke detectors. There are also homes that are not approved by the Calgary Health Region. It should be noted that among these there are variations in services and surroundings.

Personal care homes that provide accommodation and services to four or more individuals are required to obtain a license under the provincial Social Care Facilities Act. Homes with fewer than four residents are not covered by this legislation and do not require a license.

What can I expect?

Approved homes are monitored on a regular basis by a team of Supportive Living Community Care Coordinators to ensure that your needs are looked after and your safety is protected. You will receive round-the-clock care in a small, more homelike setting and you will be able to take some personal belongings. How much and what depends on such factors as the size of your room.
