A long-term care center offers a range of residential, personal and health services to people who are elderly, disabled or chronically ill and who need 24-hour care. They also provide a number of health care supports like day programs, respite and rehabilitation services to people who still live in their own homes.  In the past, long-term care centres were known as auxiliary hospitals and nursing homes.

How do I find a care centre?

Admission is based on an assessment of health and personal needs. This assessment is done by a community care coordinator.

All admissions are through Community Care Access at 943-1920.

What can I expect?

Long-term care centres provide:

  • 24-hour nursing and personal care
  • Physiotherapy, occupational therapy and recreation therapy
  • Social services and pastoral counseling
  • Pharmacy services
  • Oxygen therapy

What can I bring with me?

We encourage you to bring personal possessions from home. How much and what you bring depends on the space in your room and on safety issues. This is something you should discuss with centre staff once you know where you are going.

How is a long-term care centre different from a lodge?

Lodges provide room, board and housekeeping for people over 65 years who are able to look after themselves. Lodges do not provide 24-hour support. Subsidized lodge accommodation is available through the Metropolitan Calgary Foundation, 101, 1121 Centre Street N., Calgary, AB., T2E 7K6. Phone, 276-5541; fax, 276-9152.

Many private alternatives are available. For information, check with the Kerby Centre, 1133 7th Ave. S.W., Calgary, AB. Call 265-0661
