Community Pediatric Asthma Service, Alberta Health Services, Calgary and area

What We Do:

We support pediatric asthma patients and their families in their family physician's and pediatrician’s offices with asthma education and spirometry. Patients access asthma education by referral from family physicians and pediatricians who are partnered with our service.

We also receive referrals from Emergency Departments at hospitals and urgent care centres.

We build and enhance asthma care through asthma education updates to a wide variety of care providers (public health, community pharmacists, teachers and the public).

We develop, standardize and disseminate medically accurate, consistent (with Canadian Guidelines) pediatric asthma information and resources.

We Believe:
Asthma shouldn’t prevent anyone from doing all the things they like to do – running, swimming, skating, skiing, snowboarding, roller-blading, playing sports or just hanging out with friends.  Asthma doesn’t have to control your life.

We are successful when children can say “I CAN control my asthma now!” (iCAN)

Children and their families are important partners in managing health and taking control of asthma.

Calgary & Area Regional Pediatric Asthma Clinic
Sites:
Alberta Children's Hospital and South Calgary Health Centre

The overriding philosophy of the clinic is to have the patients seen by the most appropriate part of the Calgary Paediatric Asthma Clinic at the most appropriate time.

The Paediatric Asthma Clinic is an interdisciplinary team working together to ensure that children who are referred receive the most current asthma investigation, advice and education.  The clinic team consists of doctors who are paediatric lung specialists and paediatricians with a special interest in asthma. We have certified asthma educator nurses and respiratory therapists as well as respiratory therapists performing pulmonary function testing.  Our comprehensive team includes social workers and psychologists and is rounded out with our valuable volunteers.  We offer services at two locations in the City of Calgary; the Alberta Children's Hospital and the South Calgary Health Centre. Specialized tests include allergy skin testing and assessment, pulmonary function testing, including FeNO ( a measure of airways inflammation), sputum esosinophils analysis (another measure of inflammation), digital device adherence monitoring, and electronic action plans.

Appointments with the Asthma Clinic are made by referral only from family physicians, paediatricians and emergency departments.  However, we have an early care program (ECP) where referrals are initially triaged and may be seen by educators and the PFT lab and appropriately managed and directed by a physician prior to a clinic appointment. The community paediatricians affiliated with the clinic may see these patients if the referring family practitioner agrees. Referrals via the Community Service are freely and expeditiously received as well in a systematic and formalized fashion.

Calgary COPD and Asthma Program (CCAP)

CCAP came into existence in 1991 under the auspices of the University of Calgary.  The program was and still remains dedicated to respiratory care, education and research.  The research branch is currently handled through the University of Calgary while the education branch is under the umbrella of Alberta Health Services (Chronic Disease Management).  CCAP strives to be one of the leading centres in Canada for asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), tobacco reduction and chronic cough.  CCAP employs 12 nationally Certified Respiratory Educators (CREs) that work in the areas of inpatient teaching, outpatient respiratory clinics, primary care clinics and community respiratory clinics providing education and spirometry (breathing test) throughout Calgary and surrounding area.  CCAP physicians (respirologists) and educators serve as committee and board members for various regional, provincial, national and international lung health initiatives.  Our goal is to provide seamless respiratory care for our adult patients (16 years and older).

CCAP educators provide one-on-one education and spirometry for patients with asthma, COPD and chronic cough.  We also offer counseling for smoking cessation.  A referral is not required for these services (except chronic cough).  We can assist patients to better manage and achieve control of their chronic respiratory disease. Breath Well....Live Well.

There are a number of community pharmacists that have received their Certified Respiratory Educator (CRE) credentials. Ask if your local pharmacy has a CRE on staff.
