Title: Can Interprofessional Collaboration Provide Health Human Resources Solutions? A Knowledge Synthesis

Principal Investigators:

Esther Suter (Project Lead)

Grace Mickelson (Principal Decision Maker, PHSA)

Funding Source:

CIHR Synthesis Grant: Knowledge Translation; http://www.cihc.ca/

Background:

In September 2007, The Calgary Health Region co-hosted a meeting of Western Provinces to discuss priorities for interprofessional education within the context of health human resources issues. During the meeting, decision-makers indicated that they could find very little evidence demonstrating how interprofessional collaboration can solve key healthcare challenges like recruitment and retention. Our team of researchers from the Western Interprofessional Collaborative felt that we were uniquely positioned to tackle this important question and submitted a proposal to the CIHR Research Syntheses: Knowledge Translation 2008 Competition.”

Objectives:

This Research Synthesis will compile and synthesize current knowledge to address the following objectives:

1)       Synthesize the outcomes of the IECPCP funded projects and the broader IPE literature as they relate to HHR;

2)       Examine the relationship between the findings and current HHR issues; and

3)       Identify research questions relating to IPE and HHR that remain unanswered.

Methods:

The knowledge synthesis includes three levels:

·    Review and synthesis of all project reports of the 20 IECPCP projects funded by Health Canada

·    Review and synthesis of the Canadian literature

·    Review and synthesis of the international literature
