I contacted a doctor on your list of physicians and was told they weren't accepting new patients. Why did this happen?

A

Once a doctor is on the list of physicians accepting new patients, their practice can fill up very quickly. The Calgary Health Region updates the list regularly, but sometimes there is a delay from the time physicians stop taking patients to when their names are removed from the list.

I contacted a doctor and his office said he is only accepting a certain type of patient. Can a physician refuse me?

A

Family physicians and general practitioners are independent professionals. They are entitled to choose how to develop their family practice and how to restrict it. Some provide "comprehensive care"  (also known as care "from cradle to grave"), to patients of all ages and all problems. Others prefer to specialize in treating certain patient populations (e.g. women's health, children's health) or age groups (children, seniors). That's their option.

I  couldn't find a doctor with the special interest I need. What can I do?

A

Some doctors notify us they have a special interest in a certain medical condition or illness. Others don't. We're currently looking at ways to collect more information on physician's special interests and how to include this data on this web site.
