General Radiography

What is General Radiography?

Conventional radiography refers to a broad range of diagnostic imaging tests, including chest x-rays, bones, and fluoroscopy procedures. These procedures are offered at all sites using the latest techniques

At right is an example of the kind of equipment used in the DI department to take general radiography images.

How is the Procedure Performed?

The positioning of the patient, X-ray machine, and film depends on the type of study and area of interest. Multiple individual views may be requested.

Much like conventional photography, motion causes blurry images on radiographs, and thus, patients may be asked to hold their breath and/or not move during the brief (approximately one second) exposure.  Patients may be asked to stay still in awkward positions for a short period of time.  There is no discomfort from X-ray exposure.

Where is General Radiography Performed?

General Radiography is performed at all Calgary Health Region hospital sites, including Foothills Medical Centre, Rockyview General Hospital, Peter Lougheed Centre and the Alberta Children's Hospital within the City of Calgary, as well as the rural sites of Canmore, Black Diamond,  High River , Claresholm, Vulcan, Strathmore , Banff and Didsbury.

Alternatively, your physician may refer you to a community diagnostic imaging clinic for this test.
