The Calgary Health Region has contracts with selected private assisted living owner/operators. These contracts outline the services to be provided to select clients of the Calgary Health Region. These spaces (rooms) are referred to as Designated Assisted Living (DAL). Each owner/operator must meet specified building and operating standards.

Clients are case managed by Home Care. Client assessments and access are managed by Transition Services.

Getting Started

  • Before entering into the DAL program, you must be a Home Care client;
  • You must be assessed by a Transition Services Coordinator, who will recommend whether or not DAL is suitable for you; and
  • In the DAL program, you must have a family doctor that will continue to provide care once you have moved into a residence. There is no in-house doctor available.

Would I benefit from the DAL Program?

This program may be for you if you:

  • need personal care support;
  • can no longer live in your home supported by Home Care and other services; and
  • would do well from living in a group setting

What can I expect if I am accepted into the program?

Based on your needs, you may receive:

  • medication assistance;
  • personal care to assist you with bathing, meals, dressing, and other assistance;
  • Licensed Practical Nurse 24 hours a day, 7 days a week;
  • A Home Care, Community Care Coordinator to manage your care plan.

The DAL residences also have social and leisure opportunities. Some residences have transportation services.

What do the suites look like?

  • The DAL suites are located within privately owned and operated Retirement Residences. Suites are either shared privates and/or studios. There are no one bedroom suites available;
  • shared private suites mean that you have your own suite but share a washroom within a contained living area.
  • studio apartments have their own living space and washroom in the suite itself.
  • The rent covers the room and board. This varies from location to location. Expect to pay $1,000-$1,500 per month, depending on the size of your suite and location. Shared private suites are less expensive than studio apartments.

What about specialized equipment?

  • Aids to Daily Living are available. If you are assessed as needing this equipment, contact the Home Care, Community Care Coordinator.
  • you or your family must arrange for any aids to be purchased, delivered, and installed. If you move, you will need to take those items with you; and
  • you are responsible for maintaining and cleaning your wheelchair or walker.

How do I pick a residence?

  • once you have been accepted into the program, you will be told which residences are appropriate for you;
  • from this list, you and your family can decide which residences to tour;
  • always call ahead and make an appointment to view the residences; and
  • report your preferred choices to Transition Services
