Patient Care

The South Health Campus will offer a broad range of clinical services, with patients accessing care in a variety of ways depending on their needs.

For instance, there will be a number of clinics offering treatment for conditions that do not require an overnight stay in hospital. Patients will be assessed and treated by the most appropriate member of the health care team (such as a physician, physiotherapist, or nurse practitioner).

The campus also will also have diagnostic areas to support assessment, investigation and timely intervention. And, of course, there will be hospital beds for those patients requiring overnight treatment and observation, or even longer hospital stays for complex treatment and care.

The goal is to ensure patients get the most appropriate treatment for their problem in a timely way.

The campus will open in phases. When fully operational in 2018, there will be a variety of clinical services available, including:

Emergency & Trauma:

The modern Emergency Department will relieve some of the pressures the three existing emergency departments in Calgary are facing. It is also anticipated the Campus will become the site of the Region’s second trauma centre by 2014, handling severe injuries resulting from motor vehicle, skiing, climbing and other major accidents.

Bone and Joint Care:

As the population ages, bone and joint care is becoming a growing concern to Albertans and health care professionals. Hip and knee replacements will be a key-service offered, and the Campus will play a large role in research and education, and serve as a resource for people looking for information on bone and joint disorders, prevention and care.

Heart-Related Services:

The South Health Campus will become the Region’s second site for interventional cardiology and vascular surgery, after the Peter Lougheed Centre. The campus will offer clinics for assessment, diagnosis and treatment of cardiac illnesses. Specialized procedures and technology will allow physicians to diagnose and treat some heart and artery conditions in a less-invasive manner, sometimes eliminating the need for major heart surgery.

Child & Women’s Health:

Birth rates in the Calgary area are rapidly rising. Each day, about 45 babies are delivered in the Calgary Health Region, an increase of about 20 per cent from 2002. In order to help meet this baby boom, the Campus will be home to a major obstetrical program, featuring new maternal and parental newborn services and a neonatal intensive care unit/special care nursery.

Other services will include:

  • General Medicine
  • General Surgery
  • Critical Care Medicine
  • Neurology and Stroke Care
  • Neurosurgery
  • Pediatrics
  • Mental Health
  • Family Medicine
