Meeting the Emerging Needs of our Communities

The population served by the Calgary Health Region is growing at a dramatic rate – 97 people move here each day and over a quarter million have in the last decade. This growth is creating tremendous pressure on the Region’s ability to provide care. So what is being done to accommodate this growth?

At the Calgary Health Region, our job is to optimize our resources to meet the current and emerging needs of the community, and to be the advocates for the health of this community. We continuously review, seek out and adopt or develop better ways of delivering care.

To guide us in our decision-making, we remain focused on our five key strategic priorities:

wellness

working with you to be as healthy as possible at every moment of your life.

access

health resources where and when you need them.

excellence

advancing health for everyone through innovation.

people

creating an environment where people want to work and grow.

investment

investing for a healthy community.

How we deliver health care is evolving as well. Providing care closer to where people live is a vital component of the Region’s overall plan – a plan that includes upgrades to existing facilities and building new ones.

How we design and build new facilities has changed. In the past, we might have considered building another traditional hospital. That approach will not work in our region, where costs continue to escalate and our population grows older. As a partner in care, the Region must work with the community to provide the tools and information for people to lead healthier lives.

We know the Calgary Health Region will continue to grow, and that is why many of our facilities are not just being expanded to meet the needs of today, but also designed to create spaces for future expansion. This will ensure the next time a new operating room is required we will already have the space available to build it.

These investments in care are happening in the city and outside of Calgary. The Region will enhance care by building new facilities and expanding existing ones in Airdrie, Cochrane, Strathmore and Didsbury. In this section, you will see how this $2.5 billion investment in the health of our region will change and improve the way doctors, nurses and other health care professionals will be able to care for you.
