BREAST HEALTH CLINIC

The Breast Health Clinic is the cornerstone of the Calgary Health Regions' Regional Breast Health Program. The clinic offers complete, compassionate and timely care to individuals experiencing a breast health problem.   A team of specialized surgeons and breast health nurses are available to provide personalized care to these individuals and their families. The main components of care are diagnosis, surgical treatment, education and referral.

DIAGNOSIS

Individuals who come through the clinic will have a consultation with a breast health nurse and an assessment by the surgeon.  Depending on the assessment, additional tests and procedures such as mammography, ultrasound, or biopsies are organized to determine if a breast change is benign or cancerous.  Newly diagnosed breast cancer patients are aided in decision making, given information to prepare for surgery, and seen postoperatively.  Ongoing communication with family doctors during this process will ensure they are kept informed and will be prepared to provide appropriate follow-up breast care once individuals are discharged from the clinic.

SURGICAL TREATMENT

The clinic has a surgical procedure room in which minor breast surgery (for example, biopsies) can be performed.  More extensive breast surgery is done in one of the Calgary Health Region’s acute care sites (Rockyview General Hospital, Peter Lougheed Centre or Foothills Medical Centre).

EDUCATION

The breast health nurses are available to talk to individual clients or community groups about breast health issues and breast cancer.  We are also next door to the Women's Resources Library. Numerous written materials on breast health or breast cancer can be accessed from the clinic, as well.

REFERRAL

Depending on individual needs, referrals can be coordinated to other specialists:

  • Geneticist
  • Plastic Surgeon
  • Medical Oncologist or Radiation Oncologist at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre
  • Dietician
  • Psychosocial counsellor or resources
  • Lymphedema Therapist
