Adult Day Support Programs (ADSPs) are designed for adults (over 18 years of age) who are physically frail, cognitively impaired or living with a chronic illness. These day or evening programs have a double focus. They are intended to provide care and support for individuals on one or two days a week so they can continue living in the community. In addition, they are intended to provide family caregivers with a much needed break from caregiving

Services

Fourteen Adult Day Support Programs in the Calgary area are funded by the Calgary Health Region. Access to these eleven programs is coordinated by Home Care. All of the Regionally funded Adult Day Support Programs provide opportunities for socialization and peer support, nutritious meals and snacks, participation in recreational activities (individual and group) and basic personal care. Between activities, participants are given opportunities for rest and relaxation. In addition, some of the Adult Day Support Programs provide special services such as health monitoring (e.g. monitoring of blood pressure) and certain types of medical care (e.g. basic wound care)

How do I get this service?

Referrals to Regionally funded ADSPs are made by a Home Care - Community Care Coordinator. You must be a Home Care client in order to attend one of the Regionally funded ADSPs. Home Care clients (or their caregivers) who are interested in an ADSP, should discuss this option with the Home Care - Community Care Coordinator responsible for their care.

See attached Adult Day Support-Urban Community Directory 2005.

How much does it cost?

Participants are responsible for payment of $8.00 a day for nutritional services while attending a Regionally funded Adult Day Support Program. ADSP participants are responsible for the cost of transportation to the ADSP and back.

How long will I have to wait?

Once a referral to an ADSP is made by your Home Care - Community Care Coordinator, you may have to wait anywhere from one month to several months to get into an ADSP. Referrals for the eleven individual ADSPs are handled on a first come - first served basis. The waiting period depends on how many people are ahead of you in the wait list for the ADSP your Home Care - Community Care Coordinator recommends for you and how quickly spaces in that program become available.
