Frequently Asked Questions


Where are the Admitting Departments located?

Foothills Medical Centre
The Main Admitting Department is on the main floor immediately inside the Emergency Department Doors.  If you enter the hospital through the main entrance, ask for directions at the Information Desk.

There are 3 other Admitting locations:

  • Special Services Building (straight through the main doors)
  • Women’s Health Centre (to the right of the main doors)
  • Health Sciences Centre (to the left of the main doors)

Rockyview General Hospital
The Main Admitting Department is to the right of the main entrance of the hospital.

There are 2 other Admitting locations:

  • Holy Cross Ambulatory Care Centre at the North Entrance
  • Emergency Department at the South Entrance

Peter Lougheed Centre
The Main Admitting Department is to the right of the South Entrance of the hospital.

There are 2 other Admitting locations:

  • Ambulatory Care at the West Entrance
  • Emergency Department at the East Entrance

Alberta Children’s Hospital
The Alberta Children’s Hospital is located at 2888 Shaganappi Trail, NW, Calgary AB. It is on the western side of the University of Calgary’s campus

South Calgary Health Centre
The Admitting Department is located on the main floor, just inside the Urgent Care doors, at the North end of the building.  There is an alternative location on the second floor, just outside the North elevators.

Richmond Road & Diagnostic Treatment Centre
The Admitting Department is located on the main floor, straight down the hall from the main entrance, or to the left as you come off the elevators from the parkade.


What do I need to bring with me?

You will need to bring your Provincial Health Care Card and insurance information.

You may also be asked to present photo identification.


What can I bring with me when I am admitted to the hospital?

If you are being admitted to the hospital you may want to bring the following items:

  • Sleepwear;
  • Robe;
  • Slippers;
  • Grooming Items (toothbrush, comb, hairbrush);
  • Glasses and case;
  • Contacts and container; and,
  • Dentures and container.

Please mark all items with your name.  Although our health professionals take every reasonable precaution with personal belongings, we are not responsible for loss or damage of personal items.

Please leave all valuables – wallet, cash, credit cards and jewellery at home. 

If you must bring valuables with you, safekeeping is available either on the patient care unit or, at Foothills, in the Admitting Department


Can someone stay with me in the hospital?

Visitors or escorts are not allowed to remain in a patient room overnight.  However, a parent may stay overnight in the room with children of any age at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.


What kind of parking is available?

All sites have paid parking lots and metered parking.  Long term parking passes are available from the Parking Office. Link to Parking Information


Why am I asked the same information every time I check in with Admitting?

In order to ensure the accuracy of patient information, Admitting clerks must validate and verify demographic information every time a patient checks in.  While this may seem repetitive, proper patient identification helps to ensure patient safety.


How do I find out which family physicians are accepting new patients?
